SEVILLANAS DANCE WORKSHOP

· What: Sevillanas dance is a very precisely popular choreographed dance in Spain. It is danced in pairs of women or a man and a woman. The character of this dance is a very joyful and yet very dignified. Participation in this class will also expose students to general aspects of the Spanish culture as well as to the Spanish Language. This class is a great introduction to flamenco: leg movement patterns, graceful upper body technique, & musicality.
· Why: The purpose of this class is to familiarize students with the most popular type of folk dance of the Spanish peninsula. Note: intermediate to advanced levels who do not know how to dance Sevillanas are welcomed to come learn it.
· When: Sevillanas Dance Class will meet every Sunday 11:30am to 1:00pm, May 4th through June 15th 2008 – no class May 11th. 40 minutes of technique pertaining to the choreography, & 50 minutes of choreography itself.

INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED FLAMENCO DANCE

· What: The Intermediate/Advanced workshop is for those who have an understanding of flamenco compases (rhythms). The compas (rhythm) we will be working on is Solea Por Buleria which is a related version of Bulerias (in a 3/4th timed measure with 12 beats per bar).
· Why: The purpose of this class is to familiarize students with the letras (verses), cortes (breaks), intricate combinations, rigorous technique (upper body & feet) & through new choreography introduction.
· When: Intermediate/Advanced Dance Class will meet every Monday 5pm to 6:30pm, May 19th through June 23rd 2008. 40 minutes of technique pertaining to the choreography, & 50 minutes of choreography itself.

Roberto Amaral began his professional career at the age of 17, and has since achieved worldwide acclaim as a dancer, choreographer, singer & composer. From 1966 through 1976 Amaral enjoyed success as principal dancer & guest artist with many of the world’s foremost Spanish ballets, including those of Jose Greco, Antonio, Raphael de Cordoba, Alberto Lorca, Ciro, & Jose Antonio. It was during this time that he toured extensively throughout Europe & the Americas with highlight appearances at London’s Victoria Theatre, Milan’s La Scala Opera House, Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens, Paris’ Olympia Theatre, Madrid’s Teatro de la Zarzuela, New York’s Carnegie Hall & Lincoln Center, Las Vegas’ Ceasar’s Palace, & Hilton International Hotels, & Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl, Greek Theatre & Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. As a television performer, he has been featured on numerous programs, most noteworthy being the Academy Awards Presentation, The Johnny Carson Tonight Show, The Third Barry Manilow Special, The Midnight Special, The Julie Andrews-Harry Belafonte Special, The Julie Andrews-Harry Belafonte Special, The Madrid-based Antologia de la Zarzuela & numerous commercials throughout North & South America. In 1981 he received the prestigious EMMY AWARD for his contributions as a flamenco consultant & lead dancer with “Lynda Carter’s Celebration” television special. In 1977, Roberto Amaral formed his own company of dancers, singers & musicians. Now as artistic director of Ballet Espanol de Los Angeles & Fuego Flamenco, he continues to create unique & refreshing approaches to the presentation of classical, traditional flamenco & ultra-contemporary forms of Spanish dance. At the same time, he has established himself as a major contributor to the training & development of Southern California’s newest generation of Spanish dancers.
